US Women's Assistant Coach Tracey Greisbaum Resigns to Take The Helm at Iowa

Tracey Griesbaum, U.S. Field Hockey's Women's Assistant Coach and Under-21 Team head coach, has resigned to take the head coaching position at the University of Iowa.

A former assistant coach with the Hawkeyes, Griesbaum takes over for Iowa coach and three-time Olympian Beth Beglin. Beglin held the head positon at Iowa for 12 seasons. Beglin also served as an assistant coach for the U.S. National Team at the 1999 Pan American Games and 2000 Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

"I just knew it was time to go," Beglin said. "When July 1 rolled around and it was time to start recruiting, I had a real hard time wanting to do it. I've been here for 14 years and in coaching for almost 20 - field hockey has been a passion of mine all my life - but at this time I just didn't feel I had the energy to do the type of job I expect of myself and give the type of effort that I demand from my student-athletes and staff."

Last season, Beglin guided her team to a 19-3 record, the Big Ten Regular Season Championship and a spot in the Final Four, where the Hawkeyes fell to eventual National Champion Maryland, 2-1 in double-overtime.

Griesbaum, who will take over the head coaching duties for the Hawkeyes immediately, was an assistant under Beglin at Iowa for eight years. She left the Hawkeyes after last season for her position with U.S. Field Hockey.

"I love coming back to Iowa because it's an environment like no other in the country. Hawkeye women's sports get tremendous support," said Griesbaum. "Also, I'm excited to come back to be around all the people I left. That was the hardest thing to leave behind when I left, and now that's what I'm coming back to."

Griesbaum led the U.S. Under-21 team to a second place finish at the Pan American Junior Championships in mid-April and a spot in the 2001 Junior World Cup.
