US Field Hockey Renews Belbin as Women’s National Team Coach

belbin.JPG (28761 bytes)COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The U.S. Field Hockey Association has renewed the contract of head women's national team coach Tracey Belbin through 2004.

Belbin's renewal follows an international search for a head coach as required by U.S. Field Hockey policy. The Association conducts a search for a head coach every quadrennium.

“We are all extremely excited to have Tracey Belbin return as our women’s head coach through 2004,” said U.S. Field Hockey Executive Director Jane Betts. “ Tracey is a dedicated and determined competitor and an outstanding coach. We are very confident she will continue to lead our national team to a new international level in the coming years.”

Originally signed as the U.S. coach in January 1999, Belbin quickly led the team to a silver medal at the 1999 Pan American Games. The team placed 6th at the 2000 Olympic Qualifying Tournament and missed qualifying for the Sydney Olympic Games.

A native of Queensland, Australia, Belbin served as a member of the Australian Senior National Team from 1985-93. She won an Olympic gold medal with Australia at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games and made an additional Olympic appearance for Australia with a fifth place finish at the 1992 Barcelona Games. Belbin served as vice captain of Australia's silver medal team at the 1990 World Cup.

Belbin currently resides in La Jolla, Calif. with her husband, John Pretorius.

In 2001, the U.S. National Team is tentatively scheduled to compete at the inaugural Americas Cup tournament in Jamaica, FIH World Cup Qualifying Tournament in France and the FIH Champions Challenge in India.
