COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - The U.S. Field Hockey Association has announced its selections for the 1999 AAU Junior Olympic Games, July 27- August 7, in Cleveland, Ohio.

Comprised of 124 athletes representing 20 states, the AAU Junior Olympic Games field hockey teams were selected based on individual performances at U.S. Field Hockey’s National Futures Tournament held July 1-4 at the University of Maryland. The National Futures Tournament is the culminating event of U.S. Field Hockey’s high school talent identification and elite development program.

The field hockey portion of the multi-sport AAU Junior Olympic Games is scheduled for Aug. 4-7 at Byers Field in nearby Parma, Ohio. The athletes will be divided into eight teams competing in two pools. Following pool play on Aug. 5-5, the tournament continues with crossover play on Aug. 6. Classification games begin on Aug. 7 with the bronze medal game scheduled for 4:00 p.m. followed by the gold medal contest at 5:30 p.m.

The AAU team will be led by a top field of USFHA coaches including Mim Chappell-Eber (Plainfield, N.J.), Amin Dhanju (Ft. Worth, Texas), Yasser Khan (Louisville, Ky.), Trish LeFever (Ocean City, N.J.), Karen Marley (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Terry Martin (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Dee Pasternick (Plainsboro, N.J.) and Sharon Sweger (Conestoga, Pa.)

For the second year, the AAU Junior Olympic Games will also serve as the selection trials for the U.S. Under-16 National Team. The team, coached by Duke University head coach and 1996 Olympian Liz Tchou, serves to introduce young players to international competition while preparing the athletes for future National Team consideration.

In its 33rd year in 1999, the AAU Junior Olympic Games are the largest national multi-sport event conducted annually for youth in the United States and the showcase of the AAU Sports Program. The event featured more than 12,000 participants in 24 sports in 1998.
